Who and Why
Hi! I have no idea who might actually read this, but I thought it might be a good idea to start with an explanation of who I am and why I am doing this.
My name is Drew. I am a 20-something year old Canadian student currently living in New York City. I studied Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences at Western University but in 2021 (shortly after I made this blog) I did something crazy and applied for a Masters program in Cinema Studies at NYU. I have never taken a film course in my life....the audacity. But after mulling over my choices for a potential science masters program I simply couldn't find a single one I was more passionate about pursuing than this one. So I thought why not give it a shot. Now, here I am, with no money in New York City. But boy was it worth it.
What inspired my admittedly abrupt and extreme change in career path? It's just that I had been thinking a lot lately about what I want to do with the time I have now. In my time researching science master programs (and yes this was in a p*ndemic) it was like I could feel my time already slipping away from me. It's that fear you get sometime in your young adulthood that maybe mediocrity and boredom is really all your career can be. And that fear is strong enough to inspire even the craziest ideas. Aside from finding something fun, I had to ask myself: what do I want to contribute to the world? And it would seem that the only thing I could settle on was my opinion.
I know, I know. We don't need just another white guy's opinion on anything. But when I really thought about what I love, and also what has helped me the most over the years and given me the most joy, the answer was so obvious. It's movies. All my life I have been passionate about film, but never had the guts (or talent) to pursue a career in making them. I have spent years thinking I was outside this fantastical world of art, but over the last year I have realized this is anything but the truth. I am a consumer, an admirer, an appreciator. Some might even call me a pop culture fanatic (all this means is I follow some stan Twitter accounts). And after years of immersing myself in this world, I would like to think I have a thing or two to say about it.
You know the saying: "those who can, do, and those who can't...", well apparently they make a blog and post their opinions on it for potentially only their mother to read. My plan is to post randomly, about whatever I want, whenever I want to post it. I'm just trying to have some fun! Though I do consider myself to be an avid movie-watcher so I shouldn't have a problem there.
I, like many, love to believe that the movies were made just for me. I wish so badly I could be one of those Oscar voters that gets those special "For Your Consideration" packages (obviously mine keep getting lost in the mail), so instead I have decided to put all my considerations here. For you. My considerations for your consideration.
So here's to me pursuing a passion. Doing something I love and putting work into it. God, I hope I keep this up.
My Favourite Films
I consider myself to be a consumer of all genres. I do not find that I have a particular affinity for any "type" of film nor do I endorse the idea of a "lost golden age" of cinema. Movies are alive and well, all you have to do is watch them and feel.
It would be utterly impossible to create a definitive list of films I love, but I'll highlight a few here I believe to be personally significant or inspiring.
